Dermaplaning

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a special instrument to shave away the top layers of your skin. In uncovering new, less damaged layers of your skin, dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of scars or other imperfections. Some people also choose dermaplaning as a method of hair removal. While dermaplaning is most often used on the face, it can be used to treat other parts of your body, too.

How does dermaplaning work?

A dermaplaning treatment typically takes around 30 minutes to complete. Your aesthetician will first cleanse and dry the skin, before using a special instrument called a dermatome. This dermatome has a small blade that moves back and forth across your skin, gently shaving off the top layers — similar to a regular razor. The treatment is painless and should not cause any discomfort. Afterwards, we’ll apply a soothing gel to minimise redness or irritation. After the treatment is complete, the skin may be slightly red or sensitive, but this should subside within a few hours.

Dermaplaning can effectively treat numerous skin concerns, including:

Dull skin

Dermaplaning removes the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving the skin looking brighter and more radiant.

Uneven skin texture

If you have rough or uneven skin texture, dermaplaning can help, leaving you with smoother, softer skin. Fine lines and wrinkles: Removing the top layer of dead skin cells can make fine lines and wrinkles appear less pronounced.

Acne scars

Dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, improving your skin’s overall texture and appearance.

Hyperpigmentation

Dermaplaning can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots and uneven skin tone by removing the top layer of dead skin cells.

Peach fuzz

Dermaplaning can effectively remove peach fuzz from the face, leaving the skin looking smoother and brighter.

Overall, dermaplaning is a versatile treatment that can effectively improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin. However, it is important to consult with a licensed aesthetician to determine if dermaplaning is the right treatment for your specific skin concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — this is a myth. Dermaplaning is a simple non-invasive exfoliating treatment and cannot affect the thickness of your hair. Your hair will grow back, but it won’t be any different in its thickness or colour.
Because the exfoliation is so superficial, dermaplaning is not painful. Some clients may feel a mild scratching sensation during the procedure.
Dermaplaning is safe for all skin types, but it is particularly beneficial for those with dry, rough or uneven skin texture. It is also a great option for those who have unwanted facial hair or peach fuzz. However, if you have inflamed acne, active cold sores, eczema, psoriasis or skin that is inflamed or broken, dermaplaning should be avoided until the condition has cleared up. Our experts will be able to advise whether dermaplaning is right for you.
Dermaplaning can be performed every 4-6 weeks, depending on the individual’s skin type and concerns. It is important to give the skin time to recover between treatments, as dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation.
